What is a battery energy storage system (BESS)?

Utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) are large banks of batteries connected to the electric grid. BESS facilities add greater reliability and resilience to the electrical grid. During times of peak energy generation, such as when power from solar or wind is in abundance, batteries can be charged to capture excess generation. Batteries can then discharge this stored generation into the grid during times of peak energy demand.

How do BESS facilities work?

A BESS facility is designed to store power from the power grid (charge) when there is an excess of power being produced and release power back to the power grid (discharge) when there is a shortage of power being produced.

Oystercatcher Energy Storage is under development in response to Maryland’s growing energy needs. Modernizing the electric grid through advanced technologies like battery storage will help address both the projected gap in electricity generation and the rising energy costs that impact Maryland families. Battery storage can help alleviate this burden by storing excess power during periods of low demand and dispatching it when power is in short supply, ensuring that the lights stay on during high demand and extreme weather.

This site is attractive because of the existing electrical substations nearby, which minimizes the need for new infrastructure.

What will be done to ensure human health and safety?

Safety is of utmost importance to Tenaska, and we work hard to design facilities that are protective of the employees, residents and wildlife. This has been demonstrated through the safe operation of the entire Tenaska fleet, which encompasses 6,600 megawatts of generation.

Advancements in technology, operations and maintenance make BESS a safe energy solution. Across the U.S., more than 35,000 MW of battery storage is installed and operating safely every day.

Tenaska’s BESS projects utilize equipment that meets or exceeds all applicable safety codes and standards, including those set by the National Fire Protection Association and the International Fire Code.

Sophisticated battery management systems continuously monitor and control project equipment and facilities 24/7, with the ability to shut down equipment on demand.

What will neighbors see and hear?

While there will be some increased activity during construction, the operating facility should have minimal impact on neighbors.

BESS facilities are quiet when operating. There are little to no moving parts, and the equipment is housed in a custom-built enclosure that muffles sound.

The majority of the site will remain wooded, as an added visual and sound buffer.

Will the facility increase traffic?

Local roads will experience a minor increase in traffic level due to material deliveries (batteries, transformers and other equipment) during the construction phase. We will collaborate with the local government on a transportation and road use plan prior to the start of construction.

After construction, BESS facilities create little to no additional traffic and use minimal lighting.

How will this plant impact air quality in the region?

BESS facilities do not emit any toxic odors or air pollution. In fact, installing BESS as part of your community’s electric grid can improve air quality by reducing the need for fossil-fueled sources of electricity generation.

How can the public comment and/or ask questions about the project?

Tenaska understands the importance of two-way communication about the project and the need to be responsive to questions.
